I wanted to share some photos I took a couple of weeks ago now during a trip to The Lake District! I’ve since had a trip overseas (more on that in some upcoming posts) as those of you following me on Instagram might have seen, so these pictures have been languishing on my hard drive and I think they deserve to see the light of day.
The Lake District is one of my happy places and it’s somewhere I have spent lots of time with my family, especially growing up. As many of you know my parents now live in the Canary Islands but they are avid hikers so we often spent weekends in the lakes and it frequently became a family affair with my Grandparents joining us – my Grandpa had a bit of a soft spot for Buttermere Bitter!
My Grandpa passed away a few years ago and my parents only visit the UK once or twice a year, but we have so many happy memories there that it’s lovely to go back. There’s something about being in the middle of such beautiful countryside that immediately puts me at ease and calms me no matter how much is going on in my life. My parents flew to the UK early ahead of our family trip around Europe so we decided to head to the Lakes in a log cabin.
My Nana joined us and we brought Maddie along too – she was still recovering from surgery (poor puppy!) so she couldn’t walk very far and I was on strict instructions to keep her exercise to a minimum as she was quite swollen. In the end it worked out well, we pottered around with Maddie and my Nana whilst my parents headed up the fells for some walking.
There are some really cute little shops and cafes to be found, my Nana’s favourite is Poppi Red in Hawkshead. They sell the most beautiful selection of homeware and also have a cafe serving amazing cakes, food and coffee. It’s a lovely place to sit outside if you have a dog with you, they provide water and welcome well behaved pups so Maddie was in her element! Hawkshead in general is lovely and you can park up and explore a little bit. We met so many dogs it was unreal.
Windermere is also a lovely place to have a walk around, I am quite the coffee addict so when I spotted Homeground I knew immediately it was my kind of place. Is it bad that I initially judge a coffee shop on their colour scheme and typeface? Well, I have to admit I do, and their grey colour scheme and nice logo stood out to me so I wandered inside in search of a soy flat white. As soon as I walked in I spotted a Made sofa and I knew I was in my happy place! I had an excellent coffee and Matt had a really good mocha, they have different types of chocolate that they can add which is such a nice touch, and I also bought the best Ethiopian coffee there, they ground it in store for me according to my needs (I wanted to use it for cold brew) and were super friendly.
I also had a look around Daisy Chain Studio which is potentially the most Pinterest-ing shop in existence. I picked up some lovely drinking jars to use for cold brew coffee and smoothies and got chatting to the owner who was just so lovely. Really recommend paying her a visit if you’re around, their homeware upstairs is gorgeous. I also love Booths supermarket whenever I’m in the Lakes and Windermere has a good branch, they stock Lazy Day products which are vegan versions of Rocky Road, Millionaires Shortbread and Tiffin – insanely good! I got some of those for treats back at the cabin.
The best thing was being able to catch up with my parents and my Nana. The cabin did have wifi but it was slow and spotty so most of the time I was offline and since the Lakes doesn’t have the best reception it was actually nice to unplug for a while and enjoy the lovely scenery. Maddie loved it and got some much needed TLC after her op, she even had puppy ice cream in the form of Billy & Margot. I got this from Ocado before we went and she absolutely loved it! At first I thought these were a little pricey but she got about four or five servings out of it and I would highly recommend them for a warm weather treat if you have dogs, Maddie had the Apple, Banana and Carrot flavour so we will try a different one next time.
Sometimes you just need to get away from it all and this trip was definitely that for us, are you a fan of the Lake District or do you have another place you like to visit to unwind? Let me know!
